Week of January 29

[Please note the correction to Kris Keiser’s email address below.—Webmaster]
Dear Friends,
Can you believe we are nearing the end of January already? The time to act on ‘new year’s resolutions’ passes quickly it seems. Here are some opportunities that you might want to act on:
First, our Diocesan ‘Regional Gathering’ for training and networking takes place on Friday, February 10 (beginning at 1 pm) and Saturday, February 11 (ending at noon) in Raleigh, NC.  There will be workshops on ministry training and development on Friday afternoon and then some teaching and reflection on issues of human sexuality on Saturday morning.  This event is open to all associated with our church. To find out more (and to register) please check out the diocese’s web site: www.adhope.org.
Second, in addition to our ‘Discipleship Hour’ (still not too late to join in!) there is another Home Group starting soon. If you are looking for a group that combines fellowship and study, this may be for you. Please contact Kris Keiser (krissppie@gmail.com) for more information. (Note: the group plans to meet every other Monday night).
Third, we welcomed into the world Henry Dickens last week. If you would like to ‘meet’ Henry and help out Lea Hanna and Steven by providing a simple meal, then sign up for a convenient night here: www.takethemameal.com.
Fourth, we are implementing a new plan for Hospitality sign-ups. If you would like to sign up for Hospitality, there is a new location for the sign-up sheets.  They are located on the large dry erase board in the back room off the Fellowship Hall (what used to be the “ping pong” room).  We are hoping that the larger display will make it more accessible for people to sign up and more noticeable to those didn’t know about it.  We will no longer be utilizing the online sign-up as we have in the past.
Lastly, if you are interested in signing up for the CtR Men’s Softball Team, please contact Steven Dickens at stevendickens548@gmail.com.  If you would like to order a jersey, they come in all sizes and can be ordered and paid for online at https://www.customink.com/g/mmw0-00av-y34k.
I look forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

Week of January 22nd

Dear Friends
Let me begin this Update with some great news:
First, Join me in welcoming into the world and into our community Henry Dickens, firstborn son of Lee Hanna and Steven Dickens. Henry was born yesterday at 2:30 pm (7lbs 4 oz., 21 inches, and healthy). Please rejoice with the Dickens’ at the good news.
Second, Our Second Session of our new ‘Discipleship Hour’ takes place on Sunday. Here is the schedule once again:
  • 8:45 am Coffee
  • 9:00 am ‘Discipleship Hour’ Classes (adults, children, youth)
  • 10:15 am Worship
  • 11:45 am Fellowship Time
It is not too late to join in on the sessions. Make an intention and set your alarm and we’ll see you on Sunday.
Third, Our first Annual Regional Gathering within Diocese of Christ our Hope takes place in Raleigh, NC on February 10 -11 (noon to noon). These gatherings will center on resourcing all of our churches in terms of ministry and teaching (ministry training sessions on Friday afternoon, Workshops dealing with issues of human sexuality on Saturday morning). Billets in homes (parishioners of Church of the Apostles) are available in order to make the event cost effective. More information can be found on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.
Lastly, per Knox’s request, please refrain from parking on 37th Street on the side nearest the building and the upper third of 37th Street (the end nearest Colonial Avenue), as well as in the spots in the parking area on the other side of the church that are designated “Knox” parking (the spots immediately adjacent to the building).  We appreciate your attentiveness to this matter.
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday.

Week of January 15—Second Sunday of Epiphany

Dear Friends
From a ‘Winter’s Blast’ to a ‘Spring Thaw’, we have seen it all this early new year. Trust you weathered the snow well and are eager to make a new start to this new calendar year.
We begin our new Sunday morning schedule this week:
  • 8:30  Coffee and Pastries
  • 9:00  ‘Discipleship Hour’ (for all ages)
  • 10:15  Worship.
Speaking of ‘new beginnings’, the Thursday Morning Women’s group is meeting as I type, and the Wednesday Night Women’s group begins the same study (Kelly Minter’s All Things New, focusing on 2 Corinthians) next week. It is not too late to join in on the fellowship and learning (even for the Thursday group). Please note: the Thursday group does have child care.
Looking forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

Week of January 8—First Sunday After the Epiphany

Dear Friends,
What a weekend we have in store for us!  As we prepare to live into our new ‘Discipleship’ and ‘Worship’ schedule, we also brace ourselves for our first named winter storm—Helena!
As of today (Thursday) we will plan on carrying on as scheduled—
  • 8:30 am                Coffee, Juice and Pastries
  • 9:00 am                ‘Discipleship Hour’
  • 10:15 am             Worship: ‘The Baptism of Jesus’.
If the church loses power before Sunday, or if it is obvious that travelling will be too dangerous, we will cancel all events on Sunday.
If power is maintained and the streets are passable, we will gather as usual.  I will endeavor to let you know as soon as possible how things stand around the church. You will then need to make your own judgement as to how best to proceed.
Some other important things you need to know:
The treasurer is preparing the 2016 Contribution Statements this week. If you would like to have your statement emailed to you, please send an email to Janie Atwood at maryjaneatwood@gmail.com today. Otherwise, your statement will be ready for pick up at church this Sunday, January 8. Any statements that are not picked up or emailed will be mailed.
If you are looking for a way to serve and would like to serve on Sundays during Worship, then please consider being an Usher.  Usher duties consist of greeting incoming worshipers and helping during the Offertory and Communion.  Please contact Clark Garvin at clarkgarvin@cox.net for more information.
Registration for the Women’s Retreat has begun.  This year, it will again be held the weekend of April 21-23 at Chanco on the James, a beautiful and peaceful location in Spring Grove, Virginia.  Registration forms are located on the table in the Narthex.  Please fill out your registration form and return it to Janie Atwood with a $60 deposit as soon as possible.  Make checks payable to Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church.
Two new Women’s Bible Studies are starting up for the New Year:
  • Wednesday evenings @Temple Richardson’s house at 7 PM, beginning on January 18. This group is open and welcomes new members.  There will be a Fellowship Potluck to start off the New Year at Betsy’s house. Please contact Temple at 489-7805 or t.richardson@cox.net for more information.
  • Thursday Morning in the Fellowship Hall here at CtR at 9:15 AM, beginning on January 12. This group is open and welcomes new members.  They hope to have child care for mothers of young children.  Please contact Janis Campbell at janiscampbell58@gmail.com.
Assuming the weather will not be as poor as predicted, I look forward to worshiping with (many) of you on Sunday.
