Week of August 26, 2018
Here are a few upcoming events to be aware of:
Rogers O’Byrne Wedding
A reminder: Everyone from Christ the Redeemer is invited to the ceremony for Jordan and Olivia, but the reception following is private. The ceremony begins at 6:00pm at the Fred Heutte Center, 1000 Botetourt Gardens, Norfolk. Please park at First Presbyterian Church (820 Colonial Avenue) and enter the ceremony on the Norfolk mermaid side (south side) of the Fred Heutte Center.
International Student Ministry
Please consider having lunch after Worship this Sunday with the Chinese students to nurture our international student ministry. Everyone has to eat lunch somewhere, after all. The food may not come right away, but the event is timed to start perfectly for us, at noon – right after worship, and close by – on the ODU campus.
What: ODU Chinese Students and Scholars Association Kickoff Picnic. Food, games, kayaking and more.
When: This Sunday, August 26th, from noon – right after worship – until 4 pm.
Where: Whitehurst Beach Park on the ODU campus, at the waterfront end of 48th Street, 1799 W 48th St, on the left as you face the water. There is virtually no parking on 48th Street, but parking is plentiful in a nearby lot that you reach from Powhatan Avenue, two driveways to the South of 48th Street, turning West.
In order to have enough food, please let David Snouffer know if you plan to come. However, even if you cannot RSVP, come anyway!
Discipleship Hour Returns
Beginning September 9, 2018, there will be two adult discipleship classes:
“Managing Your Finances God’s Way,” a Crown Financial Ministries video-based study led by Bob Atwood.
“Understanding the Old Testament,” led by David Watts. A book and timeline will be available for purchase for this class.
A children’s class will also be offered at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday.
There will be a special insert in the bulletin until September 9th with a tear off sign-up sheet to place in the offering plate, so please let us know if you plan to attend one of the adult classes and if you will have children in the children’s class and/or the nursery during Discipleship Hour. Email the church office (or call 226-8700) if you would like to sign-up, but do not have access to the bulletin insert.
Children’s Sunday School (during worship) begins September 9th, with a breakfast (Please note the change of date for the breakfast).
Women’s Group Studies Return
The Wednesday Evening Women’s Group resumes September 12th at 7pm at Temple Richardson’s with a pot luck supper and to discuss our study for the fall. We will be studying the attributes of God using two books, one by Tozer and the other by A.W. Pink. We may have to change nights due to Angela Copeland’s schedule, but this will be decided at the potluck. Contact Temple Richardson.
The Thursday Morning Women’s Group resumes September 13th at 9:15am in the fellowship hall. For the Thursday morning group, Childcare is provided, and the book, “Practicing the King’s Economy, Honoring Jesus in how we Work, Earn, Spend and Save” will be discussed. All women are welcome. For questions, contact Janis Campbell.
Quarterly Congregational Meeting
Plan to stay after Worship September 16, 2018 for our quarterly congregational meeting. Among the topics being presented will be our newly updated child safety policy and the Discipleship Hour offerings and framework.
Look forward to worshiping with you Sunday!

Week of August 19, 2018
Dear Friends,
When you pass the mid-point of August you know the Summer is waning and the Fall is fast approaching. Here are some of the things we need to know to help us all prepare for the new season:
First, An Update on our Child Protection Policy: The Leadership Council began its deliberations on the strengthening of our policy and committed itself to completing the draft by this coming Sunday. Once the policy is written, we will then forward it to the bishop for diocesan approval. We also agreed that the policy will be presented publicly at our next scheduled Quarterly Congregational Meeting set for Sunday, September 16th immediately following worship. Please mark that date on your calendars and keep the council (and diocese) in your prayers as they engage in this important task.
Second, Our ‘Discipleship Hour’ returns on Sunday September 9 from 9:00 -10:00 am. This is the time our community gathers to learn ‘to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord’. There will be two Adult offerings in addition to our Children’s program. Details of the classes will be found in Sunday’s bulletin and on the web. Plan now to participate in this vital aspect of our common life.
Third, A Missional Opportunity: There is renewed energy surrounding our outreach towards International Students at ODU. If you would like to befriend a student/scholar and share the love of Christ in the most basic of ways, then please contact Hank Thompson or David Snouffer soon!
Fourth, Jordan O’Byrne and Olivia Rogers will be married next Saturday, August 25th. Please pray for these two as they prepare for this great event, and for us as a community of faith as we welcome and support them in their (soon-to-be) married state.
Fifth, Our Episcopal Visit is set for the first weekend in October (6-8th). Bishop Quigg and Annette Lawrence will be with us in multiple ways that weekend culminating in our worship service on Sunday. We will be celebrating baptisms (and possible confirmations) that day. Should you, or a member of your family, wish to be baptized ( or confirmed), please speak as soon as possible to Brian+ or David+.
Looking forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.
