Week of July 21 of Pentecost

Dear Friends

We leave tomorrow (July 22) for Rwanda and covet your prayers for the next 10 days. The team consists of Rob Slaughter, Kim Johnson, Scotti Johnson, Debra Bustetter, Maggie Fraser, Jordan O’Byrne, Claire Campbell and myself. Our hope is to communicate via email as we are able so keep on the look-out for any further updates. I attach the tentative schedule with this email (though it has already been changed significantly, it will at least show you the kinds of things we will be doing).

I pass on some good news as well today: Charles Jenkins came through his day-long surgery and is now in recovery mode. Please be in prayer for Charles in this new phase of his saga, and for Carolyn as she prays and waits for his recovery. Linda Richter will be the point person for the church as far as communication with the Jenkins (Charles will not be able to receive visitors until further notice). Please contact Linda (shamaw46@gmail.com) for further information on Charles.Have a great week. I will look forward to seeing you all on August 3.

Week of July 16 of Pentecost

Dear Friends

We are less than a week away from our trip to Rwanda.  There are 8 of us going (Rob Slaughter, Kim Johnson, Scotti Johnson, Debra Bustetter, Maggie Fraser, Jordan O’Byrne, Claire Campbell, and myself). We leave together on Tuesday July 22 from Dulles in DC at 5:55 pm and return in two groups: Rob and Kim return on Tuesday July 29 and the rest of us on August 1 at 3:30 pm.
There are a number of ways you can help with the trip:

First, commit to pray for the team daily (it would be great if you could start today!). Ask that God’s favor would be poured out upon us and that his will done in and through us.

Second, if you have not yet sent in your picture (of you or your family) and/or your ‘note to Mbyo’ you can still do so (but time is running out). Jordan and Maggie are putting the Scrapbook together now. Send your material to jordanobyrne7788@gmail.com.

Third, we are trying to work out our travel to DC on Tuesday (July 22) and return on Friday (August 1). If you would like to drive up to DC with a group on Tuesday, or drive home from DC on Friday, please let me know. Or, if you have a vehicle you could lend us (larger car to swap for one of our smaller ones; or one you do not need for the 10 days and we could leave at Dulles), then please let me know as well.

Have a great week. Looking forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

Week of July 3 of Pentecost

Dear Friends

As we all keep an eye on ‘Arthur’ and prepare for the holiday weekend let me bring you up to speed on the details for our ‘Yard Sale for Rwanda’ on Saturday:

First, if you have some items to donate for the sale you can drop them off this afternoon (between 1:30 and 3:30 pm) or tomorrow afternoon (1;00 to 3:00 pm).

Second, if you have some time tomorrow afternoon between 1 and 3 to help us organize the items for the sale we could use your help. Simply show up and someone will put you to work (What a great way to wait out the storm!)

Third, if you are free Jordan and the team would love your help with the sale itself. We will meet at the church at 8:00 am and begin to set up for a start of 9;00 am. Whatever is not sold by noon will be given away so the ‘clean up’ will simply be to move the plastic tables back upstairs.

The sale’s proceeds will help defray the costs for the trip to Rwanda later this month and will be a great way to meet some neighbors – always a good thing to do for those who are called to ‘love our neighbor as ourselves’.

Have a great, safe, and blessed weekend. See you in worship on Sunday.

Week of June 27 of Pentecost

Dear Friends

I am writing to you this week from the ACNA Assembly in Latrobe PA (home of Arnold Palmer for all the golf fans out there). It has been a great few days with wonderful teaching and worship and opportunities to connect with friends old and new (The Canadians are here as well. We’ve run into the man who married us and whom we have not seen in 28 years, among others!) It has been fun and helpful at the same time.

A few things to draw to your attention this week:

First, we will have a Pot Luck lunch after worship this week. Please plan now on staying and bring something to share. We will have a chance to report on the Assembly as well as the chance to get to know one another.

Second, our Yard Sale to help defray the cost for our Rwandan trip in late July takes place on July 5. While we do hope to make some money, one other purpose for doing this is to meet some of our neighbors around Knox. What we need now though are items to sell (remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure). Please take a moment and look around your house and see if there are things you wish to donate for the sale. Please contact Cheryl (757-226-8700) if you wish to drop off the items between 10 am and 2 pm on Tuesday through Thursdays, or Jordon O’Byrne (jordanobyrne7788@gmail.com) if you need to arrange a different day or time to do so.

Third, there has been a change of dates for Nile Gomez’ ordination to the diaconate and Bishop Steve Breedlove’s parish visit. The visit takes place on September 12-14 with the ordination taking place at our Sunday worship. It will be a great way to jumpstart our fall season.

Looking forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

Week of June 11 of Pentecost

Dear Friends

There are a number of things to bring to your attention this week.

First, I ask you to both rejoice and weep with some of our members:

• Gerry Massie mourns the death of his father – John A. Massie. John died on May 30 from prostate cancer. Gerry wrote me a wonderful email in tribute to his father and knows that he ‘does not mourn as those who are without hope’ – but he still mourns the loss. Please remember Gerry in your prayers.

• Sharon and Jonathan (and Gideon) Aumen welcomed Luka into the world and into their family on Sunday June 8. Let us rejoice with the Aumen’s over this wondrous gift of God. If you would like to help provide a meal for the new parents please contact Jennifer Brown.

Second, we celebrate Compassion Sunday this week, June 15. Come to worship prepared to celebrate the gift of Compassion and how it is helping us connect in a meaningful way with our brothers and sisters in Rwanda. If you have not yet had the opportunity to sponsor a child, be in prayer this week seeking the Lord’s direction.

Third, our mission trip to Rwanda is fast approaching (July 22- August 1). There are multiple ways that you can participate in the trip:

• Sponsor a child in Rwanda through Compassion this Sunday

• Write a greeting and submit a photo for our ‘Scapbook’ that will be taken to our sister parish

• Help with our ‘Rwandan Yard Sale’ scheduled for July 5! (Donate some items for sale; help set up and ‘man’ the tables on the day)

• Commit to pray for the 8 who are going on behalf of the church.

Fourth, the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) – holds its triennial Assembly in Latrobe, PA June 24-28. Janis and I are delegates from our Network this year. The most important event associated with the Assembly will take place prior to it however, as the bishops of the ACNA gather in convocation next week to prayerfully discern the next Archbishop for the Church. Please be in prayer for this convocation and for the Assembly.

Fifth, allow me to ask you to set your calendars for a very special weekend in August – the 15th – 17th. Bishop Steve Breedlove will be with us that weekend for his first ‘Parish Visit’ and will culminate the weekend with the Ordination to the Diaconate of Niles Gomez at our service on Sunday August 17. It promises to be a great celebration.

Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday.

Week of May 22 of Easter

Hey Folks

As we head towards the weekend let me remind you of the special reception that will follow our worship on Sunday. We have the chance to ‘welcome back’ Emily Louise and Charles Zimbrick-Rogers and to ‘Welcome to the World’ their new baby, Louisa.  Emily and Charles (and Louisa) are house-hunting this weekend and will return to Norfolk in July. Charles will be assigned to the Navy Hospital in Portsmouth and Emily will join us as in intern (part of her requirement for the M.Div. program at Princeton Seminary).
If you would like to help with the reception please contact Janis (janiscampbell58@gmail.com). Some of us will be bringing ‘shower gifts’ to welcome Louisa (and help out Mom and Dad), but all of us are welcomed and encouraged to come to join in on the celebration.
One other item today: We are making progress on the new room renovation but still need some help with painting. A few tasks remain: one, we need to finish ‘cutting in’ the ceiling paint all around the room; we need to put the second coat on the baseboards and doors and windows; and we need to do some touch up on the walls. If you could donate some time to the project over the next week we should be able to get the painting done in the next week. Then we will clean the floors, wire for AC and move in some furniture and we will be good to go!
If you can lend a hand please let Clark (clarkgarvin@cox.net) or Janie (maryjaneatwood@gmail.com) know.
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday.

Week of May 8 of Easter 2014

Dear Friends

In the midst of this nice weather, let me bring you up to speed on some of the recent developments (especially as they relate to our ‘building’):

First, we have concluded our renegotiation of our lease with Knox, accepted the provisions of the orginal leases extensions (at a reduced rate suggested by Knox!) and added a possible 3 more years of options.

Second, Knox has agreed to give us the use of their old ‘junk room’ (the large room next door to the Dwelling Place). This will become a useful multi-purpose medium sized room (almost the same size as our Fellowship Hall), and will allow us to have multiple things going on at any given time.

Third, to prepare the space for use, we have called two Work Days for the next two Saturdays.
This Saturday our plan is to clean out OUR Junk room (off the Ping Pong room) – to toss what needs to be tossed, to decide on what needs to be kept, and then decide how best to store it!). We begin the work at 11 am (after the Leadership Council meeting). If you can lend a hand (and especially if you would like to have dibs on the stuff we choose NOT to keep) we would appreciate it.

Next Saturday, May 17 we plan to have a longer work day to scrape, clean and paint the new space (it has not been used for over 40 years!). This is dependent upon Knox completely clearing the space (something Pete is determined to do asap). We will know by early next week if the ‘day’ is on but wanted to get the word out now and ask you to pencil it in. More on this next week.
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday.

Week of April 24 of Easter

Hey Folks

What a great Easter day we had last week. The good news is, we have up to 50 days to celebrate and reflect on God’s New Creation birthed through the victory of Israel’s Messiah.
We mark that celebration this Sunday with our Pot Luck Lunch immediately after worship. Please plan to stay and to bring something to share with the ‘Family of God’.
Please note that any who wish to ‘Explore Membership’ within CtR will meet briefly with me on Sunday in my office immediately after worship and before the Pot Luck (this will be an organizational time only).
Please note as well that should you wish to prepare for Baptism, either for yourself or for your child, please speak with me (or reply to this email) before May 4. Preparation will take place during the month of May for a Celebration of Baptism on the Day of Pentecost on June 8.
Looking forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

April 16 of Holy Week

Our Holy Week Journey continues tonight with the ‘Stations of the Cross’ service. We gather at 7:00 pm for this simple, reflective, and prayerful movement following the ‘Way of the Cross’. Please join us.

Then tomorrow evening, April 17 we gather at 6:00 pm sharp for our Maundy Thursday celebration. We begin with Dinner in our ‘Upper Room’ and the rite of the Foot Washing. Then we will process into the sanctuary for the Celebration of the Eucharist (the FIRST Eucharist) and end in the ‘Garden’ with the Stripping of the Altar.

On Friday we gather at 6:00 pm for our Good Friday service once again focusing on the ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’. This is a wonderful way of marking and reflecting on the glory of the Cross. Read Seven Sayings of Christ by Hank Thompson. This is a reflection he wrote from last year.

On Saturday we need some folks to help us set up for Easter Day! We will gather at 10 am to decorate the sanctuary (put up the banners and set up the chancel etc).

On Easter Day, can I remind us all to bring in some fresh cut flowers from our gardens for the children to use to ‘Flower the Cross’.

Looking forward to an incredible Holy Week with all of you.

May God’s peace and grace be with us all.

Week of April 10, 2014

Hey Folks

What a gorgeous day! One of the advantages of a later-than-normal-Easter is that we can enjoy it within the full panorama of Spring – Glorious! (By the way: that is a good way of reminding us to bring some cut flowers from home for the Flowering of the Cross on Easter Sunday).A few other things to note this week:
First, let me bring us up to speed on the two prayer requests I made this week:
  • The good news is that Elise Atwood returned home today. She is one week into a 6 week recovery period, so your prayers need to be continued. But do pause to give thanks for the healing to date.
  • The somewhat disappointing news is that Charles Jenkins will need more surgery tomorrow morning. The doctors are needing to explore to discover the source of the infection. Pray for God’s guiding hand in all of this.
  • Can I add a third request?  Clark Garvin is scheduled for a procedure on Monday. Pray that all goes well with him as well.

Second, for those who are creating a ‘station’ for our Stations of the Cross, please be sure to bring them in on Sunday to be hung on the walls of the sanctuary after worship.

Third, Holy Week begins on Sunday with the Palm Procession beginning PROMPTLY at 10:00 am in the Fellowship Hall. Set your clocks ahead at least a quarter of an hour to ensure that you will be present in plenty of time.
Fourth, after Coffee hour on Sunday we could use some help to get the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall ready for the rest of the week. If you can stick around and lend a hand it would be greatly appreciated.
Fifth, remember that Holy Week is a great time to invite a friend to join you in worship. Most people who visit a church do so at this time of year, and most do so because of an invitation from a friend!
Looking forward to a great Week together.
